Lying to the south of Hadrian’s Wall, the Vindolanda site was the first Roman frontier in the north and was used for over 400 years before being abandoned in the 9th century. Today the site contains a modern world class museum which was extended in 2018 with a Wooden Underworld gallery, housing a rare collection of 2,000 year old wooden finds (including a toilet seat and a toy sword!).
